Civil Rights Heroes

Fighting for Fairness at Work

Workplace discrimination affects workers across every background, industry, and community. At a time when some are pushing to roll back the civil rights protections workers depend on, the Civil Rights Heroes project takes workers’ stories directly to the audiences who need to hear them: journalists, policymakers, and advocates working on the front lines of civil rights.

Civil Rights Heroes Tell Their Stories

Marissa Holland

Civil Rights Hero Sergeant Marissa Holland recounts her story of being passed over for a promotion to sergeant, and how in the process of challenging the decision, her lawyer Joseph Sulman uncovered evidence of gender bias in the workplace.

Ruby Mohamed

Civil Rights Hero Ruby Mohamed was fired from her position with the Society for Human Resource Management after filing a racial discrimination complaint. Ruby discusses the systemic nature of the discriminatory workplace environment.

Lisa Graham

Civil Rights Hero Lisa Graham was wrongfully terminated under false allegations from her position as an HR Benefits Generalist. She fought back – not only for herself, but also for her co-workers experiencing harassment.

Marissa, Ruby, and Lisa stood up, and their stories show why civil rights protections matter for every worker. Those protections last only when we defend them. Sign up for updates on NIWR’s work and help make sure workers’ voices are heard where it counts.
